What to prepare before you hire a web developer

Most website projects that run late are not slowed down by code. They wait on decisions and content. Gather these five things before you ask anyone for a quote and you will get clearer prices and a faster launch.

1. One sentence on what the site is for

"Get more phone calls from people nearby" leads to a very different site than "sell products online" or "show my portfolio to agencies". Write down the one thing a visitor should do.

2. Your content, even in rough form

Text about your business, your services, prices if you publish them, and real photos. It does not need to be polished; a developer can shape it. It needs to exist.

3. Two or three sites you like, and why

Not to copy them, but to show the feeling you are after: calm, bold, playful, technical. The "why" matters more than the link.

4. Access to your domain and hosting

If you already own a domain, find the account it is registered with. Make sure it is registered in your name, not a previous developer's.

5. A budget range

A range lets the developer suggest the right approach instead of guessing. A good developer will tell you what fits inside it and what does not.
